Virtual reality is quite demanding on the computer hardware because it is necessary to display simultaneously two images for each of the eyes with a high frame rate. That’s why when choosing VR Ready computer speech about its compactness, as a rule, does not go. Nevertheless, Intel decided to challenge and solve the problem in its own way, presenting the most compact computer for VR-content playback at CES 2018.

Two new models of VR Ready Intel computers are named NUC8i7HVK and NUC8i7HNK (NUC – short for Next Unit Computing). They are based on the i7 processor of the 8th generation, and the sizes of the cases are comparable to the human palm. The CPUs are complemented by the integrated AMD RX Vega M graphics system, which eliminates the need for cumbersome graphics cards. The model NUC8i7HVK is equipped with GPU Vega M GH with a large number of computational units, a higher clock speed and with the possibility of overclocking. And the model NUC8i7HNK is equipped with a simpler GPU – Vega GL.

Representatives of Intel argue that the Vega GH provides significantly higher performance, if you compare it, for example, with NVIDIA GTX 1060 cards. The Vega GL model for performance is comparable with the cards of the GTX 1050. Both compact computers provide in modern video games like Doom VFR (about which we told you not so long ago) output 1080p-pictures with a frame rate of 60 fps. But, of course, it will be possible to test the iron of the new NUC of Intel production with the help of real VR-benchmarks only after they go on sale.

Computer enclosures include Thunderbolt USB-C ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, a Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.1, HDMI, and a 3.5mm speaker and microphone connector. Representatives of Intel argue that the older model can support the output of the image simultaneously on six displays. While the company does not disclose the cost of compact computers, but most likely, it will become known in the coming months, as well as the date of their receipt into free sale.
